우리의 인생은 언제나 수많은 선택의 길목에서 무언가를 결정하는 갈림길의 연속에 있다. 자신 스스로 하고 싶은 일과 때로는 자신의 마음과 다르게 해야 하는 일에서 고민을 한다. 일반적으로 하고 싶은 일의 대부분은 자신을 위한 선택이며, 해야 하는 일의 대부분은 자신과 관계를 맺고 있는 타인을 위한 일이 많다. 모든 사람은 삶에서 다양한 존재들과 인연을 맺으며 살아간다. 때로는 누군가의 자녀이며, 배우자이고, 부모이며, 특정한 공동체의 구성원이다. 이러한 모든 관계에는 다양한 의무와 책임이 맡겨진다. 예술가의 삶을 살아가는 미술인 역시 예외는 아니며 가족을 보살피며 자신의 삶을 개척해야 한다. 미술학도로서 예술가의 삶을 꿈꾸던 권성호 작가도 예외는 아녔다. 하지만 현실을 살아가는 생활인으로서 그에게 허락된 운명은 어느 날부터 직업전선에서 생계를 책임지는 한 가정의 가장이었다.
그의 고향은 전라남도 완도군 금당면이다. 푸른 파도가 넘실대는 섬마을 바닷가에서 유년기를 보낸 작가의 첫 번째 꿈은 드넓은 바다를 항해하는 마도로스였다고 한다. 미지의 세계를 향한 동경(憧憬)과 새로운 만남이 가득하여 다소 현실과는 거리가 있지만 순수한 자신만의 삶을 살아가는 정신적 자유로움에 매력을 느꼈을 것이다. 고등학교 진학을 위해 광주로 상경한 그는 성실한 학업을 이어가며 자신이 잘 할 수 있고 좋아하던 미술에 관심을 가졌으며 결국 미술대학에 입학하였다. 순수한 감성과 드높은 이상을 소유한 그에게 예술가의 모습은 마치 마음속 깊은 곳에 끝없는 바다를 소유한 자유로운 마도로스처럼 인식되었기 때문일 것이다. 하지만, 그는 대학을 마치고 보다 자유로운 예술 활동을 위해 다양한 직업에 종사하였다고 한다. 가장으로서 가정을 책임지며 자신이 추구하는 순수한 작품활동을 위해 경제활동을 한 것이다. 이러한 방법으로 분주한 일과를 마치고 언제나 자신의 화업을 꾸준하게 이어가며, 단 하루도 자신의 꿈을 포기한 적이 없다고 한다. 결과적으로 그는 언제나 순수하게 예술활동을 이어가는 동료들과 교류하며 지역에서 자신이 속한 단체의 발표전에 꾸준히 참여하였다. 시간이 지나며 아들, 딸이 장성하고 생업의 무게를 어느 정도 벗어던진 작가는 이제 자신이 그토록 원하던 오롯한 자신의 작품활동만을 위한 예술가의 길을 준비하고 있다.
작가는 어느덧 이순(耳順)을 넘어 몇몇 인정받는 미술인들이 일가를 이룬다는 연배에 도달하였다. 삶의 지혜와 세상의 이치를 이해하는 오늘, 미술계에 새롭게 선보이는 청년미술인처럼 설레는 마음으로 첫 개인 전람회를 준비하고 있다. 너무도 간절하게 바라던 이번 발표전의 주제는 “모향연(母鄕然)”이며, 그가 오랫동안 천착(穿鑿)하던 어머니와 고향을 품은 자연을 그려낸 작품들이 소개된다. 언제나 소중한 가족과 함께하던 일상의 기억과 떠나온 고향을 떠올리는 자연의 풍경들이다. 그만의 조형적 어법과 색채로 화면을 구성하는 그림을 통해 작가로서 주변과 만나는 자리가 될 것이다. 출품작에는 국내 동년배 작가들이 모두 공감하듯 80년대 미술의 관심사이던 공모전 참가작품, 혹은 시대적 상황을 담아내던 사회 참여적 경향의 초창기 작품도 만날 수 있다. 이후에 자신만의 고유한 주제의 작품으로 전개되는 화업의 흐름과 발전상황을 공감하는 전시를 보여준다.
권성호 작가의 작품에서 가장 많이 보여지는 배경 이미지는 자연의 풍경이다. 밝은색을 이용하여 명도와 채도가 강조되었으나 작가의 개성이 드러나는 그만의 독특한 중간색으로 표현된 대지에 생명감 넘치는 수목이 자리한다. 우리나라 어느 곳에서도 편하게 만날 수 있는 구부러진 소나무들이 화면에 배치되어있다. 유난히 따스하게 느껴지는 남도의 토양에 수많은 우여곡절을 겪어낸 민초들의 삶을 상징하듯 수수하게 표현된 소나무들이 서로를 의지하며 존재한다. 작품에서 만나는 자연과 주어진 환경에 조화를 이루며 살아온 소나무들의 모습에서 관람자들은 작가의 원만하고 온화한 삶의 정서를 공감할 수 있다. 이러한 배경의 자연에 작가는 본인이 중요하게 생각하는 주제를 표현하였다. 가장 먼저 다가오는 주제는 그에게 마음의 고향으로 설명되는 어머니의 모습이다. 그가 그려낸 많은 작품에는 편하고 안락한 모습의 여인들이 보여진다. 화면을 들여다보면 고단한 하루를 마치고 평안한 휴식을 취하는 여인이 작가의 고향 풍경을 연상하는 산과 바다, 섬, 구름, 나무와 함께하고 있다. 이는 자연의 이미지와 어머니의 모습을 중첩시켜 그리운 고향, 혹은 언젠가 돌아가고 싶은 어머니의 품과 같은 대상을 그린 것이다.
한편의 그림에 다양한 상징을 배치하여 작품을 만나는 이들에게 그림을 감상하는 즐거움을 선물하는 권성호 작가의 의도는 매우 순수하다. 이는 숨은그림찾기와 이미지 퍼즐처럼 작용하여 작가 스스로 전달하고자 하는 메시지를 표현하고 있다. 그의 작품에는 한국적인 주제로서 우리에게 다정하게 해석되는 산, 나무, 동물, 물고기, 가족을 비롯하여 우리의 일상적 소품과 생활상이 담겨있다. 화면에 보이는 산과 바다에 정겨운 바닷새들의 모습이 자리하며 정박하여있거나 어딘가를 가는 고깃배의 모습은 우리에게도 언제나 찾아가고 싶던 고향의 정겨운 모습일 것이다. 작품 “아름다운 여인(2024년 作)”의 예를 들면 녹음이 우거진 산과 멀리 보이는 구름, 바다를 배경으로 여인의 모습이 자리하고 있다. 화면의 하단에는 커다란 연꽃잎이 있으며 행복하게 유영하는 원앙새 한 쌍이 그려져 있다. 한편, 작가는 화면의 중간 부분에 구름의 이미지를 그리며 여인의 복부에 태아를 표현하였다. 이는 한 편의 시(詩)처럼 아이와 어머니가 함께 살아가는 시간과 공간을 은유하고 있다. 작가는 이러한 작품을 통해 자신의 마음속 깊은 곳에 자리하는 가족애를 표현하여 우리가 살아가는 따뜻한 세상을 보여주고 있다.
예술에는 다양한 장르가 존재하며 분야마다 그에 어울리는 언어적 특성이 우리의 감성을 자극한다. 가장 대표적인 미술 분야의 평면 회화는 작가의 상상력과 감수성이 잘 드러난다. 내용의 전달과 이해도가 비교적 수월하여 관람자와 창작자의 원활한 소통에 장점이 있다고 한다. 권성호 작가의 작품에도 이러한 조형적 언어의 소통이 잘 드러난다. 그는 화면에 그려진 다양한 존재들의 형태와 색채를 통하여 인간의 희로애락을 포함한 삶을 조망하는 작품을 추구하고 있다. 작가는 바쁜 일상에도 대학원에 진학하여 전통적인 미술의 기법, 재료, 형식을 새롭게 체득하고 자신의 작품을 원점에서 바라보는 노력을 진행하였다고 한다. 화가로서 느리지만, 바른길을 걷기 위해 자신만의 회화적 조형성을 연구하고 자신이 느끼는 감성을 올곧게 전달하는 방법을 오랜 시간 번민하였다. 이러한 노력의 결과물을 발표하는 이번 전시를 앞두고 작가는 자신의 소중한 작품들이 “많은 사람과 공감하고 마음의 위안과 포근함을 느낄 수 있는 그림이었으면 한다”고 독백하고 있다. 기나긴 여정의 먼 길을 어렵게 돌아와 예술의 바다를 항해하는 마도로스와 같은 순수한 마음으로, 작가로서 살아가기를 결정한 그의 용기와 결심에 박수를 보낸다.

Foreword to Sung-ho Kwon’s Solo Exhibition
MoHyangYeon_母鄕然 – “Portray Nature Embracing Mother and Hometown”

Our lives are always at a crossroads of countless choices, where we must decide something. We often ponder between what we want to do and what we have to do, sometimes contrary to our own desires. Generally, most of what we want to do is for ourselves, while much of what we must do is for others we are connected to. Everyone lives by forming connections with various individuals in their lives, whether as someone’s child, spouse, parent, or member of a particular community. These relationships entail various obligations and responsibilities. Artists, too, confront the challenge of pioneering their lives as artists while also fulfilling their familial duties. Sung-ho Kwon, who dreamed of an artist’s life as a student, was no exception. However, as he navigated reality, he encountered the fate of becoming the main provider for his family’s livelihood on the frontline of employment.
His hometown is Geumdang-myeon, Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do. The artist, who spent his childhood by the coast with blue waves, harbored his initial dream of sailing the vast seas as a mariner. While it seemed somewhat distant from reality, his heart brimmed with admiration for the unknown world and new encounters. Therefore, he would have been drawn to the mental freedom of living his own life purely. As moving to Gwangju for high school, he diligently pursued his studies and discovered a passion for art, excelling in it and finding great enjoyment. Subsequently, he enrolled in an art college for further education. With his pure sensibility and lofty ideals, he envisioned the artist as a free-spirited sailor, with an endless sea residing deep within his heart. However, upon completing college, he explored various occupations for more free artistic activities. In other words, he continued to sustain his family while pursuing his pure artistic endeavors through economic activities. He steadily invested time in artistic activities after busy daily life and never once gave up on his dreams. Consequently, he consistently engaged with fellow artists, participating in exhibitions organized by his local community. As time passed and his children grew up, easing some of the burden of livelihood, the artist is finally preparing to fully dedicate himself to the path he has longed for, artistic pursuits.
The artist is over 60 years old and has reached an age when several recognized artists have achieved great success in their fields. Today, as he understands the wisdom of life and the nature of the world, he is eagerly preparing for his first solo exhibition like a young artist newly introduced to the art world. The theme of this long-awaited exhibition is “MoHyangYeon(母鄕然)”. And it displays artworks that depict the nature embracing the mother and hometown, which he studied for a long time. These works describe daily memories spent with precious family members and the natural scenery of his hometown that he left. The exhibition will serve as a venue for the artist to connect with audience through paintings created using his unique expressive techniques and color. Additionally, you can enjoy works that participated in contests of interest in the 1980s, as well as early works reflecting a social participatory tendency that captured the zeitgeist of that time. Subsequently, the exhibition showcases works that align with the artist’s unique theme, reflecting the flow and development of his painting.
Nature’s landscape takes center stage in Kwon’s artworks. Bright colors enhance brightness and chroma, while lively trees are located on the land depicted in a unique intermediate color that reflects the artist’s personality. Curved pine trees, commonly found throughout Korea, are depicted in his pieces. These subtly expressed pines rely on each other, symbolizing the lives of those who have weathered countless experiences in the warm soil of Namdo. As these pines harmonize with nature and surroundings, viewers can resonate with the artist’s amiable and gentle life sentiment.
In these natural backgrounds, the artist communicates the themes he holds dear. Chief among these is the portrayal of motherhood, symbolizing the homeland of the heart. Many of his pieces depict women in serene and comforting scenes. Upon closer inspection, one can observe a woman, having endured a challenging day, finding solace amidst mountains, seas, islands, clouds, and trees reminiscent of the hometown. This overlap of nature and maternal imagery evokes a longing for hometown and mother’s arms, that he hopes to return to someday.
Through the placement of various symbols in a single painting, Kwon’s intention to present the joy of viewing to audience is very pure. They serve as a hidden picture game and image puzzle, conveying the artist’s intended message. His works depict everyday elements of life, such as mountains, trees, animals, fish, and family, which are affectionately interpreted as Korean themes. The friendly seabirds nestled in the mountains and seas, along with the anchored or passing fishing boats, evoke the welcoming ambiance of our hometown, a place we’ve always yearned to revisit. For example, in the artwork ‘Beautiful Woman (2024),’ a woman is depicted against a backdrop of lush green mountains, distant clouds, and the sea. At the bottom of the work, there is a large lotus leaf, and a pair of mandarin ducks are happily swimming. Additionally, the artist depicts clouds in the center of the canvas, symbolizing a fetus in the woman’s abdomen. Metaphorically, it represents the time and space where the child and mother coexist, like a poem. Through such pieces, the artist deeply expresses his familial affection, rooted firmly in his heart, revealing to us the warm world in which we reside.
Art encompasses various genres, and each field stimulates our emotions with its appropriate linguistic characteristics. The most representative genre of art, flat painting, effectively reveals the artist’s imagination and sensibility. It is known for its relatively easy conveyance and understanding of content, offering advantages for smooth communication between viewers and creators. In Kwon’s artwork, this communicative aspect of sculptural language is well evident. He endeavors to depict life’s diverse aspects, encompassing human joys and sorrows, through the shapes and colors of various subjects on canvas. Despite his busy daily life, Kwon enrolled in graduate school to acquire new techniques, materials, and forms of traditional art, making efforts to approach his work with a fresh perspective. Though he is slow as an artist, he has devoted considerable time to pondering his unique painterly style and effectively expressing his sensitivity, all in pursuit of the right path. Prior to the exhibition, which shows the results of these efforts, the artist states, “I hope my cherished works become paintings that many people can sympathize with, offering comfort and warmth.” I applaud his courage and determination to live as an artist, with a pure heart like a sailor, returning from a long journey to navigate the sea of art.
