그림 그리는 길을 선택했던 시간과 무엇을 표현해야 할까? 고민하고 방황한 많은 시간이 어제 같습니다. 변화와 어려운 상황에도 붓을 놓지 않고 저의 인생을 그린 작품을 전시하게 되어 가슴이 벅차오릅니다. It feels as though it were only yesterday that I chose the path of painting, and spent countless days questioning, wandering, and searching for what I should express. Through change and hardship, I have never let go of the brush. To present works that have come to embody the journey of my life is profoundly moving.

“자유를 찾아서”란 작품은 군인들의 총칼 앞에 항거하며 싸웠던 영웅의 얼굴을 그린 작품으로 민주주의를 외쳤던 민주열사와 우리 시대 자화상입니다. 어렵게 이루어낸 우리의 민주주의는 위대한 유산이며 자랑입니다. “In Search of Freedom” portrays the face of a hero who resisted and fought before the guns and bayonets of soldiers. It is at once a portrait of the democratic martyrs who cried out for democracy and a self-portrait of our time. The democracy we achieved through such hardship is a profound legacy and a source of pride.

“가족”이란 작품은 가정을 이룬 후의 작품으로 흙으로 빚어진 남자와 비녀 위에 새가 앉아 있는 하얀 여인의 모습, 그 위에 묘지, 호기심 가득한 아이가 있는 작품으로 삶과 죽음이 자연의 동일 공간 존재하여 인간은 자연으로 돌아간다는 의미를 담고 있습니다. “Family” was created after I began building a family of my own. In the work, a man shaped from earth appears alongside a white female figure with a bird perched upon her traditional Korean hairpin, known as a binyeo; above them is a grave, and nearby stands a child filled with curiosity. The painting speaks of life and death existing together within the same space of nature, and of the truth that human beings ultimately return to nature.

현재는 희·로·애·락의 누워 있는 인체의 포즈를 통해 “자연의 향기”를 담고자 하는 작품을 하고 있으며, 자연의 향기인 ”하늘을 보다” 란 작품에는 고사된 소나무가 있는데 이는 모든 것이 영원함이 없고 생성·변화·소멸의 반복적 의미를 가지며 자연을 품, 어머니, 여인, 고향으로 보고 자연과 인간의 아름다움을 구상적으로 표현한 작품을 하고 있습니다. At present, I am working to capture the “essence of nature” through reclining human forms that embody the full range of human emotions—joy, anger, sorrow, and delight. In “Looking at the Sky,” a work from this series, a withered pine tree appears as a symbol of impermanence—the ceaseless cycle of birth, transformation, and disappearance. I see nature as an embrace, a mother, a feminine presence, and a homeland, and I continue to express, through figurative language, the beauty of nature and humanity.

누구나 그렇듯 각자의 인생이 있습니다. 살아온 인생이 다르고 상상의 원천도 다르다고 생각합니다. 저의 상상의 원천을 구상하고 표현하는 작업을 통해 작가의 정신과 무한한 인간의 능력을 표출하고자 노력 하고 있습니다. Every person has a life uniquely their own. As our lived experiences differ, so too do the sources of our imagination. Through the act of shaping and giving form to the source of my own imagination, I strive to reveal the spirit of the artist and the boundless potential of human beings.

저의 손때 묻은 작품을 몇 번의 이사 과정을 거치면서도 소중히 보관해 준 아내가 있어 좋습니다. 홀로 가는 외로운 길에 자연이 있고 혼자가 아닌 둘이고, 셋이고, 넷이고, 다섯이고… 그리고 저를 사랑으로 지켜봐 주신 여러분이 있어 외롭지 않게 길을 걷고 있습니다. I am grateful to my wife, who has treasured and kept my works, each bearing the traces of my hands, through several moves over the years. On this solitary road, nature has been with me; and I have not been alone—there have been two of us, then three, four, five… And because all of you have watched over me with love, I continue to walk this path without loneliness.

시리지만 공감하고 마음의 위안과 포근함을 느낄 수 있는 그림이었으면 합니다. I hope my paintings, though touched by ache, may invite empathy and offer a sense of comfort and warmth to the heart.
